Unwinding the Heart: German Spring and My Courtyard Sanctuary

Whenever I’m busy in my room and happen to catch a glimpse of soft, vibrant greenery outside, I feel my entire being exhale. A deep sense of relief washes over me. There is something profoundly restorative about fresh green leaves; they have a quiet power to gently loosen the knots in our hearts.

Driving through the German countryside right now is pure joy. Vast fields of yellow rapeseed flowers stretch out, and the steadily deepening green of the trees feels incredibly fresh. It is as if the plants themselves are rejoicing in their own growth, and simply by witnessing it, my own spirit resonates with that same joy.

The same magic happens on my walks. I’ll catch a sudden splash of pink or white blossoms—a vibrant contrast to the green—and my heart instantly lifts. After Germany’s long, harsh, monochrome winter, it feels as though a heavy curtain has finally been lifted, letting nature’s blessings pour in. The initial, delicate hesitation of the early spring buds, followed by their fierce, unstoppable life force, is deeply moving.

Cultivating My Secret Sanctuary

Right now, as I write this at my desk, my gaze naturally drifts to the window. Right there stands a tree with soft, light-green leaves. It’s a sturdy evergreen, yet its gentle hue completely softens the usual rigidity of a conifer.

When I first planted it, it wasn’t even a meter tall. The soil was so hard and unforgiving that I wondered if it would ever survive. Yet here it is today, standing at the perfect height, looking completely at home. Nearby, a rose bush with a now-thick, grounded stem prepares to burst into voluminous pink flowers, right next to a winding honeysuckle—a plant often used in flower remedies for emotional healing.

This precise angle is visible from both my sofa and my desk. It is my small, intentional sanctuary.

When we first bought this house, the grounds were spacious, yet I struggled to find a single spot where I could truly relax. The previous owner had left the space completely open, offering no privacy from the neighbors. At first, I worried about how to block the outside world and protect my space.

A Lesson in Boundaries: I realized that what started as a practical need for “walls” to protect my privacy ultimately transformed into a sacred space for my inner self. The very boundaries meant for protection ended up creating a sanctuary that sets me free.

The Concentration of Happiness

I didn’t need a massive, sprawling landscape. In fact, years ago, I lived in a rental with a huge, immaculate lawn. While it looked like a postcard, I quickly grew tired of the endless maintenance.

Today, I know myself better. I don’t need a vast view; I prefer a single, meaningful branch where my gaze can pause. That “soft density of green” is where my heart finds rest. From now on, I want to cherish this concentrated happiness that fits right into my field of vision.

Over time, I’ve created several of these personal pockets of peace around my home. Our living spaces don’t have to be perfect from the start; they grow and evolve as we do. For instance, the corner with the large window where I enjoy my courtyard view happens to be a “missing corner” according to Feng Shui—an imperfect shape. Yet, by placing vibrant greenery just outside that window, the energy is beautifully compensated.

Whenever my eyes meet that green, the time flowing through my day suddenly softens, and a deep sense of ease returns. You could call it a Feng Shui adjustment, or perhaps, a beautiful activation of the heart.

A Gentle Question for You

A sanctuary doesn’t need to be grand or extraordinary. It can be a simple, quiet corner where your eyes can rest and your soul can breathe.

How about you? Do you have a space in your life—either outside or deep within—where your heart can completely unwind?
